Media News Update

Rupert Murdoch is facing competition for full control of Sky after US cable giant Comcast this week tabled a rival £22bn bid for the broadcaster. This comes after Murdoch's 21st Century Fox had agreed an £18.5bn deal to buy the 61% of Sky it does not already own.

The takeover battle has prompted Maurice Levy, chairman of advertising giant Publicis, to warn marketers that negotiating ad deals with Sky will become much harder as the bidding war warms up. 

The uncertainty over its ownership has raised questions about the future of Sky News, with the Competition and Markets Authority intimating that full Murdoch control of Sky could jeopardise media plurality in the UK. For now, it is mostly business as usual at the news channel which is putting its focus into leading the way in gender equality in television journalism

Sky isn't the only media giant mulling over the consequences of a takeover. The conclusion of Trinity Mirror's acquisition of Northern & Shell's newspapers has seen Daily Express editor Hugh Whittow and his Daily Star counterpart Dawn Neesom step down from their roles. Trinity Mirror's former chief operating officer, Mark Hollinshead, has been installed in a temporary post to oversee the assimilation of its new assets. As whoever takes over Sky will discover, getting a deal agreed is only the beginning…
