Media News Update

This week The Drum columnist Ian Burrell explored how Forbes Media is behaving like a startup in its bid to grow in Europe. You'll remember the 100-year-old publication recently snapped up The Memo. Now the changes are coming thick and fast, for one, it has doubled down on its contributor network as HuffPost pulls back.

Ex-BuzzFeed UK editor Luke Lewis is now on the books at Johnston Press' i tasked with building upon an online presence that lags significantly behind rivals. i reportedly takes in a tenth of the Mail Online's 14m monthly audience and less than half of The Sun's 5m. At the moment there are only six staff dedicated to the i website, Lewis likens it to the early days of BuzzFeed.

Vox Media is cutting back its native social video operation, a minor setback for those on 'Team Video Pivot'. 50 staff, largely from the Racked, Curbed, SB Nation and the Video Services teams, have been let go. A further 12 staff have been offered new roles. Jim Bankoff, chief executive of Vox Media blamed "industry changes" (Facebook's algorithm change?) and the company's "long term budgeting process".

Further to this, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn issued a warning to certain elements of the press after multiple titles ran disproven stories claiming he was a Czech spy. He said the "lies and smears" show "just how worried media bosses are about the prospect of a Labour government". He vaguely alluded to greater regulation of the industry if he comes into power.

Finally, Google's View Image button has been dumped to prevent people stealing images from third party websites. This lawsuit settlement with Getty Images will help clamp down on copyright breach.

How ex-BuzzFeed UK editor Luke Lewis plans to build an 'audience-driven newsroom' at i

In print, i is regarded as a rare modern-day success story. The concise national newspaper, now in its eighth year, recorded an average daily circulation of 257,223 in January, about 100,000 more than the Guardian's. Online, however, it trails way behind its peers. Here's how ex-Buzzfeed UK editor Luke Lewis plans to change that.
